MY DAYS

Live in rooms full of light
Avoid heavy food
Be moderate in the drinking of wine
Take massage, baths, exercise, and gymnastics
Fight insomnia with gentle rocking or the sound of running water
Change surroundings and take long journeys
Strictly avoid frightening ideas
Indulge in cheerful conversation and amusements
Listen to music.
~A. Cornelius Celsus

The older I get the more
conscience I am of my
health. I do not live in
a fairy tale world, I know
that terrible things happen
in this world, I just choose
to avoid reading or watching
about them.  I no longer
watch the news, it always
makes me cry;  I am
married to a news hound
so I feel he watches enough
for both of us.
I make a point of getting outside
everyday to breathe in
the fresh air and to exercise.
My favorite chair to sit in
is a rocking chair my mom
gave me when I had my first
baby. At night when I can't
sleep,  I rock and knit or read
a little, it's soothing.
I try to laugh daily, I read
somewhere it's good for you.
Laughter always makes me
feel better.
I eat pretty healthy, most
of the time. I eat serving
size bowls of salad which
my family loves to tease
about. There has been no
wheat or sugar in my diet
since the beginning of the
year and I do feel better.
Music is part of my daily
life, granted I can't carry a
tune, but that doesn't stop
me from belting it out right
along with Pandora Radio.
I have quiet time and I
pray.
Are you remembering to
take care of yourself?
xx

  1. Yes, our lives do sort of parallel--I'm the "no news"/apolitical gal, too--while my better half is steeped in it and love politics! (We learned long ago this is a subject banned in our house.)
Can't carry a tune in a bucket so they say--but love it. (Housed 2 tenors last night--kids touring on their spring break who sang at our church; nice concert)
Now if I could just give up the sugar!!!!!!

  4. Isn't it amazing how we take this stuff for granted when we are younger and then have to make a special point of it as adults? I'm with you - No news. I'm at the point in my life that a Hallmark commercial can make me cry, so I'm a wreck if I watch the news.

  5. All very good advice. For years an elderly gentleman friend who was living with (and later died from) Parkinson's disease would remind us that the simple act of smiling releases endorphines and makes you feel better. He is also the same one who would say, "I have joy in tribulation!" He was a wise friend.

  7. Love your big salad. My daughter always comments on my big yummy salads. News only reflects on the sensational, sad and tragic. I prefer to focus on the happy, amazing and fun parts of life. There is so much beauty I would prefer not to miss it.

  9. a wonderful post tracey, and so sweet of you to share these important words. the only thing i would add to cornelius's quote would be to read enlightening or uplifting material every day. i love mary oliver and anything by pema chodren and national geographic. oh! and the smithsonian and wild bird. i haven't read the paper in years either. and i sleep to the sound of breaking waves. but i am not so strict with the nutrition diet anymore, i love wine and dark chocolate!
    happy tuesday! xxx lori

  10. Ah, if only I did everything in that quote! We try to live as healthy and as basic as possible here. Sometimes, in my current season, I feel as though I can't always keep track of it all with my four little ones. But they motivate me to be the best I can be so I can keep up with them!

I always cry at the news too!
I should look after myself a little more than I do, much love to you.

  14. Thanks for the reminder, a little head cold has reminded me this weekend, that I am doing a little bit too much and not taking time for myself. Your post came at the perfect time to remind me to take of myself.

  16. i keep thinking i'll give up sugar but never make it beyond 24 hours...i blame it on the call of dark chocolate :(

  17. Oh Tracey, I commend you on your no wheat no sugar habit! I want to do this, but so far I haven't wanted to bad enough, I guess. Good for you, I bet it does make a difference. And I hear that the longer you go without sugar, the easier it is, as if your body "forgets" about wanting it since it hasn't had a taste lately.

  18. I need to take on your no sugar habit. For real.

and tease your family right back. The average person need about 9-12 servings of rich dark greens a day. That means giant salads (and I am not going to complain about that!).

  19. Oh my, I hardly watch the news anymore and my reasoning is the same. Same with the newspaper, which my husband just doesn't understand. I always watch something funny before going to bed. Otherwise, I imagine I'll have bad dreams. Life's too short for that.

  20. Thank you for this inspiring post! I feel exactly the same about the news. I also don't watch graphic or violent movies or TV shows any more. And actually, I feel the same about much of the rest of it too!
