"I grow plants for many reasons: to please my soul,
to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience,
for novelty, or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy
in seeing them grow."
~ David Hobson
I am still knitting away on my
socks, but I made it the extra
fun part so I don't mind. I have
knit one heel and am just about
ready to knit the heel on my
other sock, to me the best part
of sock knitting.
At night I have been reading
Daybook: The Journal of an Artist
and during the day I have been
reading and studying The Handbook
of Natural Plant Dyes. I ordered
a box full of natural yarn from
KnitPicks and can not wait to try
my hand at this craft. I plan on
using mint for my first try since
I have it growing everywhere,
even where I don't want it to ;)

So much beautiful green in your photos Tracey, green is my favourite colour :) Can't wait to see how the dying goes, so exciting to try something new. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteCould you show us how your're going to dye the yarn with mint? We have lots of it in the garden here and I'd be interested in learning how it's done. Look forward to seeing how the yarn turns out!
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to see what your dye up! I know you'll do beautiful work :) Love your socks :)
ReplyDeletecan't wait to see how this works. my dyeing so far has only gotten as far as buying three books and a box of yarn!!!
ReplyDeleteOh you will have so much fun with the natural dyeing method! I never really got into it much, but there was a lady I once knew who was into natural dyeing, and she had some beautiful shades of yarn from different sources, even pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteOooh! I have dreams of dye garden. Looking forward to seeing the results of the mint!
ReplyDeleteThe heel and gusset are my favorites as well!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how the mint dye comes out. I use Knitpicks yarn to dye as well. It's so soft and seems to wear well. What kind of green creature is that in the leaves?
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy knitting the heel! I'm not quite there yet though :-) Beautiful pictures!
ReplyDeleteI just planted mint (for mojitos this summer) but in a pot. The cat mint in the front yard took me years to control and dig out. I don't want that happening again!
ReplyDeleteI am about to put mint in and hoping it goes somewhere- never would have thought of dyeing with it! I can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeletethat's exciting. can't wait to see how the yarn turns out!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with natural dye - great idea with the mint ! Your socks ppl so fun- love colorful yarn.
ReplyDeleteI love how your yarn and projects are all totally dwelling in your plants. :) Awesome. And a little lizard too!
ReplyDeleteMint has a way of, how shall we say, expanding from it's boundaries, no? :) After having an entire raised bed taken over by peppermint a few years back, I now grow it in a wine barrel planter that keeps it in bound. Your socks are coming along nicely, Tracey!

Good luck with your yarn dyeing! It's always looked like it would be fun, but a little messy.
ReplyDeletesuch gorgeous minty pictures !!! and I love the colour of your socks...
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how the mint dying goes - I had it take over a few years ago and we had to pull it out. We just didn't use it enough - if I found enough neat ideas for it, I might just have to put some in a less over-takeable spot. I love all the green in your photos - our spring green is just starting to show up and I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteHaha- yes that mint has a special talent of getting everywhere - so why not the dye pot?! Have fun, Tracey : )
ReplyDeleteI love your green pictures! Beautiful spring :-)
ReplyDeleteYour socks are coming along beautifully too!
Hope the sun will be back for you very soon.
Beautiful photos and great socks. Love the lizard!!
ReplyDeleteLove the color of the socks. As always your pictures are the best! :)
ReplyDeleteI love mint despite it's sprawling tendencies. The little gecko camouflaged in the mint patch made me smile.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will keep us posted on your experience with dying the yarn. What a neat idea. I am not a knitter, but I am mesmerized by your beautiful photos of your knitting projects. They are so pretty and you seem to work them up so fast.
Your second sock is like summer days filled with Koolaid on the front steps.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your dyeing, i love it,
ReplyDeleteLove that little head peeking through Tracey! That last photo is beautiful - what gorgeous contrasts.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are beautiful Tracey and I love the green! The lizard is cute :)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your dyed fibers... What an exciting new adventure!
ReplyDeleteYou can buy undyed yarn ????? I have wanted to give it a go for ages but thought the only way to get undyed yarn was to spin it yourself. Hmmmmm, now you've got me thinking! Can't wait to see your results.
