SEPTEMBER

The goldenrod is yellow,
The corn is turning brown,
The trees in apple orchards

With fruit are bending down;

The gentian’s bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
 In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun;
The sedges flaunt their harvest

 In every meadow nook,
And asters by the brookside
Make asters in the brook;
From dewy lanes at morning
The grapes’ sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies–

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather
And autumn’s best of cheer.
Even if my thermometer is still reading
in the 90's I am beginning to notice a
change in the feel of the air and the
light as it makes it's way across the sky.
Shadows hang around a little longer,
the grass is wet with a heavy dew in
the mornings as I drink my first
cup of tea and the smell of the
air has "that" smell- do you
know the one I mean?
 My table is piled high with
books waiting to be shelved and
the smell of fresh paper and pens
lingers in the house as we prepare
for the start of a new school year.
It's time to restock my planner
with meals like stews and Sheppard's
pie and I can't forget pumpkin pudding.
My knitting basket is full of beautiful
wool yarn just waiting by my rocker
along with a soft throw to keep away
the chill.
Firewood still needs to be split
and quilts laundered for the beds,
but for those things  there is  time,
but soon, oh so soon, cooler weather
will be here!
September, my favorite month of
the whole year, welcome.xx
Photos from my land as I took a
stroll around the property yesterday.

  1. What a beautiful poem -- thank you for sharing it and the photos.

    I am ready for September, but not for this sticky miniature heat wave we're about to enter.

  3. As we start our September over here in anticipation of warmth,blossoms,birds, butterflies,and the awakening of everything from it's winter's sleep I wish you well as your part of the world starts it's inward journey and you look forward to cooler days and fireside evenings. Kate xx

  8. What a lovely poem! I'm so glad you're smelling Autumn in the air even though it's still very hot. I love it that you can have winter fires there in spite of the blistering summers. Reminds me that we need to order our firewood. Happy September to you!

  10. what a sweet beginning to september. i can tell how much you love this month. i am so happy too, fall means our town goes back to being sleepy and uncrowded. most all of the summer campers and beach goers have left and the shore is once again empty. this morning as i was out for a walk alone with the seagulls and and sandpipers, i felt like i was with an old friend. it was also really foggy and damp and i made a mental note to cast on for some toastys!

    happy september :)

  13. Your words make me long for Fall! September still is a bit on the hot side here (we have Indian summers) so I really can't wait for October. Thanks for sharing your lovely thoughts!

  22. I love that poem. Your photos complement the words perfectly. You paint such a lovely picture of your home with the basket of wool by the rocker and the soft throw for your feet. Sigh. The familiar scent of fall is in the air here, too.
