YARN ALONG

~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Linking with Ginny.

Potholders in my kitchen receive
a daily workout. No frilly or thin
potholders are allowed. I need
something that can take lifting a
#12 iron skillet with lid out of a hot
oven and know that I won't get burned.

After finding out [ the hard way] that
my favorite potholders had a few
weakspots I decided to double knit
a few new ones and learn a new
technique in the process.

Double knitting isn't hard, but I
still need to practice getting
the tension correct and to remember
which yarn to knit and which to purl.

I have been reading The Secret
Holocaust Diaries by Nonna Bannister.
It is a free Kindle download and although
the subject is sad, the book is a good one.
I am finding it to be an informative
story concerning what happened to
Russian citizens during such a horrific
time in history. I plan on having my thirteen
year old read it in a few years along with
The Diary of Anne Frank and The Hiding Place.

  1. I read a similar book (fiction) about the Russian side of things called "the Winter Garden." Another good book about the civilian side of things in Germany would be "Stones in the River."

  2. I've been reading magazines...I really need to read some of the dozens of books I have waiting. A few years ago I bought the The Critical Edition of The Diary of Anne Frank. I really need to finish reading it.

  3. I have double crocheted, but I haven't double knitted yet. I think potholders are a terrific place to start though! It's nice to know you like your kindle. I completely see its value!

Btw, I am so enjoying SC!!

  4. Hope your pot holders keep your fingers out of harm. I downloaded The Secret Holocaust Stories from Kindle last week. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. It is my next book in line to read once I get through The Lacuna, which I feel like I have been reading forever, but it's just a case of not having much time to read of late.
I don't know if you have read the book, Elly. It is based on a true account of Elly Berkovits Gross during the Holocaust. I remember reading it years ago in high school it is one book that has stuck in my memory as a book I liked, despite the subject. Jacinta

  6. I find double knitting a bit tough sometimes for sure. That book sounds good, I have to be in the right frame of mind for such reads as it makes me so sad. Good luck with those potholders, no more burns.

  7. I need to learn this technique. I see things on Ravelry using it all the time, but haven't gotten down to actually putting it on my queue. The pot holders look great!

  9. The double knitting sounds like a great thing to learn how to do-the knitted potholders will be great! Your needles are beautiful-what fun! I have read the book, and loved it. Difficult, but what an inspiring story. I am thinking I need a Kindle for my birthday-glad to hear you enjoy yours!

  10. Yay for new skills! The Holocaust time period is so hard to read yet seems to important too. It is skipped over in most school history books too it seems. The Boy in The Striped Pajamas is a great introduction book for 13 yr olds. It touches on the Holocaust without the sad, graphic details.

  11. I've only done a tiny bit of double knitting before and thought it was pretty neat. You're potholders sound great!
I am terrible with sad books - especially those relating to the Holocaust. It is so important to know about our history but so hard at times, too.

  15. Great post. Finished my socks so no yarning for a while. Sewing pot holders with the insulated quilt batting is up for me next too. I want to make some cool slide on holders for the cast iron skillets.

  16. Your knitted potholder looks lovely. I'll have to try that double knitting technique and make some for myself. Half of my potholders are dangerously thin--what's up with that? I wonder how manufacturers get away with selling them?
