I NEED YOUR HELP

The greatest cruelty is  our
casual blindness to the despair
of others.

I learned to knit because I
wanted to knit socks, I think
I even mentioned in this space
that I wanted to have 100 pairs
of socks in my drawer when
I died,
and then I saw this ...
and was ashamed of myself.

Why do I need 100 pairs of socks
when I live in a coastal town and
wear flip flops or go barefooted
most of the time? I don't.

I have learned that Knitter's and Blogger's
are some of the most caring, giving
souls and I could use your help, I think
we could offer a little bit of beauty and
warmth to someone who has so little.

If you're a sock knitter would you
consider making a pair of socks to
donate to the homeless? There are
an estimated 1,750,000 homeless
in the US and 36 % of those are
families with children so all sizes
are needed.

And if you're not a sock knitter
would you consider buying a pair
of dark colored socks to donate?

My goal is 100 pairs that will be
sent to Washington DC to be
distributed to the homeless. I
would like to make the trip myself
and that may still happen, I will
keep you posted.
Winter is fast approaching and I
would like to have the socks
ready to go by Thanksgiving.

My email address is in my profile
at the left if your feel moved to help.

Thank you,
Tracey
XO

  6. This is a great idea, and I'll donate socks to a charity over here for you. I know that the refugees in Calais are in desperate need of men's socks and other items, so maybe UK and European readers could consider this. xx

  7. This is a great idea and I didn't know that socks were the least donated item, how curious and I wonder why? Do we take socks for granted?

  9. What a wonderful idea Tracey. Around here they have sock trees at Christmas at different locations, and instead of decorations people buy socks (and hats, mitts, and scarves) and decorate the tree. All the donations go to shelters.

Will send a pair of socks your way for this project. xo

    1. Yep! Same in our town... trees all around the city are decorated with warm clothing for the homeless. :-) We wrapped quite a few scarves around them ourselves last year.

  14. What an angel you are, Tracey. I will try to knit a pair. I like I won't have to worry about size and fit and can just follow a pattern.

  16. There is no way I will be able to knit a pair of socks by November, but I can either donate socks here where I take all of my hotel soaps and shampoos that I collect or I can send you a check and you can buy socks to donate when you take all of the others. Let me know how you want to go about that! Lovely idea.

  20. Aw Tracey! How kind of you. Yes, I'll send some socks. I've never made TWO socks, but I'll buy some cozy socks at a toy store I visit. They sell the COZIEST socks.

  21. Great post. Tracey you are a doll for posting it. I have been knitting mittens to donate this fall to our homeless in Chicago. I made all sizes. We have homeless children in our midst. I have knit 10 pairs. I try to knit in acrylic so they wont shrink. Keep up the great work

  23. I didn't know socks were so needed. When I bring a box over, they always ask for soap, toothbrushes, and other personal hygiene items. I'll be sure to add in a package of socks next time. Thanks for calling attention to it.

  26. What a wonderful idea, Tracey! I didn't know that socks were least donated! I've never made socks, but now I'll get to YouTube and start learning so I can make a pair! I really hope I will be able to send it to you, as international postal service isn't the best in the world here. Thank you for spreading awareness!

  29. What a beautiful idea Tracey :) You have such a caring heart. You have inspired me to knit up/ donate some socks for our local homeless resource center here in England. They are often in need of clothes yet I'd never considered how important socks are. Thank you for your inspiration and your kind soul. xx

  31. What a beautiful idea! I'm still working on my very first sock ever, not sure I'll be able to finish up another whole *pair* by your goal date...but even if I can't make them myself, I will be sure to include socks of some kind next time my church collects clothes for the local shelter. Such a simple thing, one that those of us who have a stable home just take for granted.

I hope you will post updates on your collection effort here every so often!
