All goes back to the earth,
and so I do not desire
pride of excess or power,
but the contentments made
by men who have had little:
the fisherman's silence
receiving the river's grace,
the gardener's musing on rows....
~Wendell Berry, "The Want of Peace"
I set the alarm and got
up before the sun to run,
I am so happy to put on
running shoes and while
I only ran three miles yesterday
and today, it's a start.
I had to hurry back to the
house and grab my camera
to show you the mama turtle
I saw laying her eggs. I now
have the nest marked to I
can keep an eye out for little
babies hatching.
I have been working in the garden
daily pulling weeds and picking
vegetables. Jars are being washed
in preparation for tomorrow's
tomato canning. There are ten
bushels to put up this go round
with more coming. It's been a
good tomato season and I am
thankful, last year wasn't.
I made another jar of pineapple
vinegar and a little sauerkraut
using this book. This is my second
batch of vinegar this year, I am
putting it on everything.
With the heat we eat a lot of salads,
and recently
this, My guy's won't touch it,
they want their watermelon plain,
so there is more for me. It has
become a new favorite and just
in time since all the watermelons
are ripe.
I am enjoying a new order
of books that came in this
week. And I am enjoying a little
time with a hoop, needle and
embroidery thread. I am working
on a lovely pattern from a friend
that I will be showing you soon.
Okay, I'm off to wash more jars.
I hope you are having a lovely
weekend and are content and
happy in your part of the world.

ReplyDeleteYour new books look right up my alley :) Have a lovely week Tracey.
ReplyDeleteYou must be feeling much better to be out running! How amazing to seeing turtle eggs being laid. Look forward to see the hatchlings. What a great selection of books!
ReplyDeleteThere is so much to love here Tracey. Wow seeing the turtle lay eggs must have been amazing. The salad looks yummy. We've been eating lots of watermelon too with feta cheese. Your reading looks interesting too, I look forward to seeing some of your pies.
ReplyDeleteWhile you get ready to can your tomatoes, I'm thinking of starting mine in preparation for spring planting. We managed to bottle enough passata to last us the year. Hope I got the calculations correct. The turtle is so cute. I am looking forward to see what your up to with embroidery. Love the rainbow of colours
ReplyDeleteYay you ran! Now I know you are feeling like yourself. Thank goodness. I have some stitchery too, but I keep knitting instead. I do hope that the turtle eggs hatch and you get some photos, that would be so lovely.
ReplyDeleteI need to get one the running bandwagon again. I signed up for a race that I am not sure I'll be prepared for. I can't believe you are canning tomatoes already! I won't until at least August.
ReplyDeleteYour garden looks wonderful... so glad you're feeling so much better!
ReplyDeleteThat salad is divine! One of my favs. I'm in the same boat as you though. I'm the only one in my house that eats it...I really do believe we were separated at birth.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous post, Tracey - so good to hear you are running again. Love everything here xxx
ReplyDeleteI wanted to ask you - do you have a pressure canner? What kind do you have?
DeleteThanks x
Yes, I actually have two pressurer cookers. They are both Presto and I love them. One was my Mike's grandmother's and the other was his great grandmohther's. The seals have been replaced and I really need to replace the gauge on the other, but they really are well made and I highly recommend this brand.
DeleteThank you, Tracey - had been looking at Presto and All American. I need to ship them over, as they are not sold here xx
Deletelove seeing you up and about and back in to life. :) and three miles a day, dang that is good to me
