YARN ALONG

"It is not from ourselves
that we learn to be better
than we are.”

~Wendell Berry

Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Joining with Ginny for this week's Yarn Along.

I must start by giving a huge
thank you to Karen for her
Cinder Block Cowl pattern,
I love it! Except for using
a smaller needle [ I used a
size 6] I followed the pattern
exactly as written with no
problems, I think that's
a first for me. I still have
to block it, but I really
don't think it needs much.
What the cowl needs is some
cooler weather and not the 87
degrees that is headed my
way so I can wear it!

Preparing to go on
my needles now
is a pattern I was
introduced to by another
blogger friend, Stacy.
The Scarf By Many Names
looks like another fun
knit to try and I will
get to practice knitting
short rows. I am still
trying to decide what
yarn to use because I
would really like to knit
just one thing I could use
now, unlike all my other
knit items that need
cooler weather to be
worn and enjoyed. I know,
the weather thing again,
but geesh, is it too
much to ask for just one
knit item I can wear?

On my night stand this
week is a book I bought
my husband for Valentine's
Bringing It to the Table. As
a family who is now making
a living from what they
can grow on their land,
I want all the information
about agriculture I can
get. I have always been
a huge fan of Wendell
Berry's and so far I am
really enjoying this
book.

I hope you have a lovely
Yarn Along day and I can't
wait to visit and see what
you have been up to this week.

CHASING BUTTERFLIES

Beautiful and graceful,
varied and enchanting,
 small but approachable,
butterflies lead you to
 the sunny side of life.
 And everyone deserves
 a little sunshine.

~Jeffrey Glassberg

The temperatures are going
to be in the 70's today which
will make a nice change from
the 80's we have been experiencing.
Dinner is already prepared, left
over grilled chicken for them
and some toasted tofu for me along
with a side dish  containing my new
favorite grain. The basket is packed
with plenty of snacks, the water bottles
are filled, school books are stacked
and of course my knitting is loaded. We
are outside today, chasing butterflies
and enjoying the sunshine!
I hope you find time to enjoy
a little sunshine in your day!

WEEKENDING

For a long time it had seemed
to me that life was about to
begin - real life. But there was
always some obstacle in the way.
Something to be got through first,
 some unfinished business, time
still to be served, a debt to be paid.
Then life would begin. At last
it dawned on me that these
 obstacles were my life.

~Fr. Alfred D'Souza

Weekending, my favorite part of the week. a time to relax, live, love, just to be. if you'd like to share your weekend either with words, photographs, or both, leave a link to a weekend post in the comments. Joining up with Amanda for her
weekending posts.

Saturday morning brought an end to
my procrastination and working a half
the day on my t*xes making me question
this self-employed lifestyle we live, but
thankfully it's only once a year.
Enjoyed a quiet evening with my best
friend, laughing just like we did when
we were 16 and finding it hard to
believe that 32 years have passed
since our first date and we have
been married almost 30 years! Waking
in the middle of the night to run
all over the house shutting windows
as the storm that Amanda drove
in made its way here.
Sunday has brought blue skies and
a cooler breeze. A birthday cake
has been baked, rolls are rising,
the grill is ready, horseshoes
are set up and the house has
been cleaned. Later this afternoon
all the children will arrive home
along with friends to celebrate
the birth of a dear friend. I
am enjoying this life I have to
live and I hope the same for you!

THRIFTY THURSDAY

The stories of childhood leave
 an indelible impression, and
their author always has a niche
in the temple of memory from
which the image is never cast
out to be thrown on the rubbish
heap of things that are outgrown
 and outlived.

~Howard Pyle

I left the local Goodwill
with some pretty special
items in my bag...  Well,
they are pretty special to
me, I'm not sure how others
would feel about a bag
full of old books [each for
a quarter]. Thronton W.Burgess
is an author so dear to
my heart and that of
my children and I now
have in my possession 7
of his books. While the
books aren't in the best
of condition, the covers
are dirty and tattered,
the binding is loose and
there is a tear and a scribble,
I love them! The stories
all deal with nature animals
as the main characters and
the 1941 illustrations are
just so sweet. I know I
really didn't need to bring
another set of books in
the house, but I just couldn't
help myself! Something happens
to me when I smell book
fumes [ and now yarn tooI]
and I just loose any and all
self control! I am joining
up once again with the
very sweet Lady Cordelia
for her Thrifty Thursday
posts. If you haven't been
to visit her you really should,
she is not only funny, has
two beautiful girls, a few
ducks in her backyard,
found her inner chef, she
is a professional singer!
I just call her my friend.

YARN ALONG

The best-dressed woman
 is one whose clothes
wouldn't look too strange
in the country.

 ~Hardy Amies

Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Joining with Ginny for this week's Yarn Along.

Well, it's  done...
I finally finished my
    Abigail Cardi!
I love it and only wish it
were a lot cooler so I could
wear it everyday, but this
is the deep south so
it will be a little while
until I can fully enjoy it.
I am thankful I don't need a
coat here so when winter does
come I have plans to wear
it daily! Well, that and the
next one I plan to knit in
a different color.

I just cast on a cowl
designed by my dear friend
Karen from Pumpkin Sunrise.
Isn't she just amazing?
I am using Patons Angora-Bamboo
yarn in Soft White which
I love as it is so soft and
will feel great when worn
against the neck.

I picked up a little book
while browsing Tuesday Morning,
Simple Knits with a Twist.
I wanted it because I would
love to knit the ballet shoes
on the cover. The slippers are
knit with ribbon and I thought
they would be fun. I only paid
a few dollars for the book
and really that's all it's worth.
I would not pay what I just
saw on Amazon. If anyone would
like to see the book I would
be happy to share, just let
me know.

What have you been up to
this week?

HAPPY

Listen, can you hear it?
Spring's sweet cantata.
The strains of grass
pushing through the snow.
The song of buds swelling
on the vine. The tender
timpani of a baby robin's heart.
 Spring.

~Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider

Happy first day
of spring and
happy birthday to
my baby who is 19
today. I love you
Peter.  I hope
each and everyone
of you has a day
filled with happiness
and you smile!

WEEKENDING

" We need to give each
   other the space to grow,
   to be ourselves, to exercise
   our diversity. We need to
   give each other space so
that we may both give and
   receive such beautiful things
   as ideas, openness, dignity,
   joy, healing and inclusion."

~ Max de Pree

A very quiet weekend with just
me here alone with the animals.
There has been:

1. Gardening work and even
though I am still not complete,
I did get  the French Lavender
in the ground. It will only last two
years because of my coastal climate,
but I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

2. Almost finishing the collar and edging
of my cardigan only to rip it all out
and start over. I don't know why I
thought it would look better if I just
kept going, but silly me, I did.

3.  Hanging out with the ducks waiting
for the snake I think has been visiting.
Didn't see the snake, but enjoyed watching
     the ducks swim.

4. Thankful for that the thunderstorm didn't
miss this time even though I sat without
    power for several hours.

5. Way too much time rabbit grooming!

6.  Enjoying the wonderful giveaway I won
from Laura Emily and browsing her Etsy
shop. She is having a 30% off spring sale
from now until the 21st. I love all of her
products, but the Lavender Tincture has
     become a fast favorite.

THRIFTY THURSDAY

Waste is worse than loss.
 The time is coming when
 every person who lays claim
to ability will keep the
 question of waste before
 him constantly. The scope
of thrift is limitless.

~ Thomas Edison

After reading about Cory
hosting a Thrifty Thursday
I knew I needed to make it
to at least one local thrift
store this week. I only a
a few minutes so I did a
quick walk around and tucked
into the corner of a shelf I
spotted this little silver sugar
bowl and creamer on a tray.
They are a bit tranished, but
for $2.50  I don't mind! I have
discovered a great way to clean
silver...
Line your sink with aluminum foil
and lay your silver on top.
Sprinkle with baking soda, then
pour boiling water over it.
Let is sit a little while then dry!
It the piece is too large for
your sink you can repeat until
all the tarnish is gone.

YARN ALONG

How doth the little busy bee
Improve each shining hour,
And gather honey all the day
From every opening flower!

~Isaac Watts, "Divine Songs"

Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Joining with Ginny for this week's Yarn Along.

I thought I could do it,
I knit every spare minute I had,
unfortunately my spare minutes
were limited and just couldn't
add up to the hours I needed
to finish my Abigail Cardi. It has
been a very busy, busy week!
I managed to complete one sleeve,
am almost complete with the
other and then all that remains
is the collar. Taking tips from
Ravelry comments I am knitting
the sleeves inside out which is really
a lot easier for me since I am much
better at knitting than I am at
purling. I am so close!

I pulled Finishing School from the
shelf because I am a little concerned
about how I am going to block the
cardigan once I am finished and I
so want it to be just right!  Other
knitter's have voiced a lot of concern
about how this yarn really 'grows'
when it's being blocked. Some people
have put the cardi in the dryer to
get the size back, resulting in a
denser finished item. One of the
things that drew me to this pattern
was the airy, drapey look of it so
the dryer is not what I want. I
have shed too many tears, spent
more money than I planned, and
knit a lot of hours to have it ruined
because of my careless blocking.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

POLLEN SEASON

Don't find fault.
Find a remedy.

~Henry Ford

While the calendar says
spring doesn't officially
start until next week,
here in the south it's
already arrived and
with it allergy season.
I am using a Neti pot,
taking a tablespoon of
raw honey daily and
cleaning constantly...
it's not helping.
Does anyone have any
tried and true tips to
survive this seaon?
I am trying to make it
without buying over
the counter meds, but
I am finding myself
weakening as the world
around me turns a pale
shade of yellow.
Help....
I'm desperate!

WEEKENDING

No child but must remember
laying his head in the grass,
 staring into the infinitesimal
 forest and seeing it grow
 populous with fairy armies.

  ~Robert Louis Stevenson,
Essays in The Art of Writing

weekending, my favorite part of the week. a time to relax, live, love, just to be. if you'd like to share your weekend either with words, photographs, or both, leave a link to a weekend post in the comments. Joining up with Amanda.

This weekend has been:
:: Hours of paper and computer work resulting in several major projects
being checked off, leaving only one major task to complete and it can
   wait a few weeks.
:: Duplicating a lunch dish I enjoyed on a recent trip to Whole Foods, except I
left out the pine nuts as they are crazy expensive!
:: Enjoying fresh tomatoes from the green house along with carrots, greens and
radishes from the garden. The tomatoes are my husband's babies that he has
    pampered for months.
:: Still blaring Adele and also adding a little Norah Jones to the mix.
:: Finishing on sleeve on my Abigail and starting the second one.
:: Not enjoying the time change at all, knowing my whole internal clock will
be off until we fall back to the normal time.
:: Going on a hunt for fairies and finding where they have a home!

[E]very time a child says, "I don't believe in fairies," there is a fairy somewhere that falls down dead. ~James Matthew Barrie, Peter Pan
